Seth Rollins Reportedly Injured During Crown Jewel Match

Current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins may have legitimately injured his shoulder during Saturday’s Men’s Crown Jewel Championship Match against Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in Perth, Australia. And it’s not just the dirt sheets saying it, Sports Illustrated’s saying it.

Jon Alba did report on the story on SI.com, but his principal source was Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer. While Meltzer’s sources within WWE aren’t always reliable, he did correctly report that Rollins’ injury earlier this year was a work.

When Rollins faked his injury during a match with LA Knight on Saturday Night’s Main Event, he took Knight’s finishing move right away, lost, then made the injury part of WWE storyline, and even appeared with crutches on non-affiliated talk shows. That’s not the approach he’s taken this time, at least so far.

The injury purportedly happened as a result of a Coast-to-Coast spot near the end of the match. Rollins continued to wrestle for several more minutes after it, and eventually won. Then, on the following episode of Raw, also from Perth, Rollins was in a promo segment, a backstage segment, and took a spear from Bron Breakker and a Tsunami from Bronson Reed, in an unexpected turn from his now former stablemates.

WWE pulled Rollins from two upcoming matches in Japan, though no injury was mentioned. His real-life, and storyline, wife, Women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch posted about The Vision betraying Rollins, with no mention of an injury:

It was Lynch who helped sell her husband’s kayfabe injury last time, but this time her and WWE are not acknowledging that any injury took place. It’s not part of storyline. In fact, The Vision betraying Seth could signal a major shift in storytelling leading up to the War Games match at Survivor Series.

Is this pivot caused by, or at least sped up by, an injury to Rollins? If not, then this is an odd rumour for some to spread. If so, is the injury legit? If it is, we would like to wish Seth a speedy recovery. But if it’s a work, then not even mentioning it is a real strange choice.
